So often in rural East Africa, the children have to spend their time cultivating the land, caring for their siblings or other young children on the compound, cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, fetching fire wood and fetching water from dirty brown rivers. Betty is no stranger to any of the above activities. Before LaTanya sponsored this 8 year old child, Betty spent her days helping her grandmother to care for her 2 year old brother. Both children were orphaned recently. This young girl uses an axe to cut wood, sharp knives to cut kale and potatoes, and her bare feet to walk miles in search of river water.
