Mercury Beating Heart
Macrochem0:402011Science & Tech
This is an electrochemical redox reaction where the mercury is placed into a solution of sulfuric acid and potassium permanganate and the mercury is oxidized, which lowers surface tension. When the iron wire is touched to the mercury, it reduces and regains tension, creating an oscillating/beating effect.
