Quick tip on thumb pain in bow hold
AdultCello0:562020
Here is a quick exercise to combat an overly active thumb that is creating pain in your cello bow hold. By removing your thumb from the equation, you can start to get the sensation of sinking into the bow with the fingers without any involvement of the thumb. After getting comfortable with the exercise, add your thumb back into the equation and see if you can maintain the sensation in your fingers from the exercise. I like to think of the thumb like shock absorbers on a car, very useful but more passive in the way that it helps the bow navigate the terrain of the strings. If your thumb is actively pressing into the stick, it is actually pushing the bow away from the string. Hope that helps!
