PhysNet - Tin Foil Capacitor and Dielectric Breakdown - Physics Demonstrations

A capacitor can be modelled by two pieces of tin foil separated by some cling film (saran wrap). If the voltage is increased over a certain level, the dielectric (cling film) breaks down and a current flows between the foil plates. The higher the voltage, the higher the electric field, and the faster the breakdown.
