Gulper Eel Opens Its Mouth Wider Than Its Own Body

The gulper eel can open its lower jaw wider than its own body to engulf prey larger than itself — one of the strangest adaptations in the deep ocean. Eurypharynx pelecanoides lives below 500 meters in permanent darkness, hunting crustaceans and small fish. Adults reach around 60 to 80 centimeters in length. At the tip of its tail, a pink bioluminescent light pulses in the dark — though whether it functions as a lure for prey has not yet been confirmed by science.
