Baekryeonsan is not the unraveling of a narrative but the construction of an atmosphere that paints the stillness and slowness of nature. The project was inspired by one idle moment on a rainy day when I was mesmerized by the view of Baekryeonsan from my kitchen. Living in that apartment for 11 years, I had seen this view countless times, yet this was the first time the mountain looked like it was shedding tears of pain. It was beautiful and unsettling. I began to imagine a supernatural force lurking amidst nature, haunting Baekryeonsan in the form of black ink. Baekryeon(백련) is the Korean word for white lotus; it acts not only as the actual symbol of the Buddist temple on the mountain but also as my figurative representation of the soul of the mountain. Bae
