James Irwin was an American astronaut and United States Air Force officer who is best known for his role as lunar module pilot on the Apollo 15 mission, which was the fourth manned mission to land on the Moon. He was born in 1930 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering from the United States Naval Academy in 1951. Irwin joined NASA in 1966 as part of the fifth group of astronauts selected for the space agency. In 1971, he flew on the Apollo 15 mission as the lunar module pilot, landing on the Moon with mission commander David Scott and command module pilot Alfred Worden.
