The Voyager missions were a pair of space probes launched by NASA in 1977 with the goal of studying the outer planets in our solar system. The two probes, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, were identical and carried a variety of instruments to measure the physical and chemical properties of the planets they encountered, as well as to take high-resolution images. Voyager 1 was the first probe to be launched, on September 5, 1977. It flew past Jupiter in 1979 and Saturn in 1980, becoming the first spacecraft to visit those planets. In 1981, it began its journey out of the solar system, and it is now the most distant human-made object in space, having traveled over 14 billion miles from Earth. Voyager 2 was launched on August 20, 1977, just 16 days after Voyager 1. It followed a similar trajectory, flying past Jupiter in 1979 and Saturn in 1981. In 1986, it became the first probe to visit Uranus and Neptune, providing the first close-up images of those distant planets. Both Voyager probes are s
