They didn't fight wildly; they sized each other up, and a female shark ate first. Smaller blue sharks moved in only after the great whites left. When the blubber was gone, the carcass sank, triggering the true whale fall. Sixgill sharks arrived, feeding for a full day and night, consuming a third of the whale. After the large predators left, spider crabs and over 30 scavenger species took over. Four months later, only a skeleton remained. Even then, bone‑eating worms drilled into the bones, absorbing the last nutrients. Over time, the skeleton turned to dust.
