Oceanographers use gliders to survey large areas because these buoyancy powered AUVs have low power consumption. Although these gliders can perform long range missions without recharging, they are currently lacking in the necessary maneuverability to explore confined areas such as reefs or to track organisms. Our vehicle has demonstrated high maneuverability using pure buoyancy control by successfully completing a 3D figure 8 in the Georgia Tech diving well. This proof of concept opens opportunities for future development of a sea-worthy, long-range, and highly maneuverable vehicles.
