In 1910, William Wallace Gibson of Victoria also known as the Birdman of Balgonie without formal training, designed and built the first successful Canadian aircraft engine. Gibson built his twin aircraft, which had wings both in front and behind the pilot. It was powered by the inventor's own designed engine; the aircraft made a successful flight on September 8. 1910, flying a distance of 200 feet at a height of 20 feet. William moved around Western Canada to continue his work on his aircraft. His flight career came to an end when an unscrupulous promoter attempted to profit from Gibson s work, ending a brief but outstanding career in aviation.
