Early Autumn (Burns) by Woody Herman & his Orchestra This basic melody line was first heard during the final 60 seconds of Ralph Burns’ four-part “Summer Sequence,” recorded by Woody’s band for Columbia Records in 1946. The passage was expanded, retitled “Early Autumn,” and first recorded in late 1948 for Capitol. This famous piece of wax is highlighted by the tenor sax of Stan Getz with Terry Gibbs on vibes. Woody would also record a vocal version of the tune in 1952 for the Mars label.
