Printable Puzzle Pieces

Back in the 1970s, when puzzle pieces were cut from wooden sticks, they were classified as either "notchable" or "non-notchable", depending on whether a chisel was needed in addition to a saw. In this video I discuss an analogous situation facing today's puzzlers interested in using DIY 3D printers to create puzzle pieces. "3D printable" shapes (and I am only referring to RepRap type machines here) have no overhanging parts and require no support material. "Non-3D printable" shapes cannot be printed on a RepRap without turning on the 'support' option, which means the pieces will need cleaning up before they can be used. Bridge pieces are a special case (not discussed in this video) which may or may not require support material, depending on how good the printer is at bridging gaps without sagging. Dual extruder machines are now capable of printing water soluble support but these are not in wide use at the present time.
