Vintage air travel: flying to Greece in 1963

In the post-war decades, the Greek state invested heavily in promoting tourism, seeking to harness the country’s climate, history and landscapes to help develop its economy. The post-war growth of international tourism was a major commercial opportunity for related businesses such as airlines. This short film about the island of Rhodes in 1963 shows how visitors from London were treated to Greek-style food before even reaching the country. When the Beatles visited Greece in 1967, the country’s tourism authorities sought to capitalise on the group’s presence through hosted activities which generated media coverage.
